SCHOOL CHILDREN RECEIVE LESSON IN CONSTRUCTION SAFETY
25th March 2009
CHILDREN from Wingrove Primary School in Newcastle have been given a lesson on the dangers of playing on building sites as Dorin Construction staff head back into the classroom.
In the last five years 530 children have been killed or injured in Great Britain when they venture onto building sites looking for a new playground and not realising how hazardous this can be.
During the sessions, the children aged between four and 11 were shown a safety video, given a talk about the importance of staying out of building sites and took part in a safety quiz. There was also the chance to try on hard hats and fluorescent jackets, which must be worn on a building site.
Kingston Park-based Dorin Construction is currently working on a project in the West End of Newcastle with Newcastle City Council to make property and environmental improvements to 340 houses in the area. Dorin Construction site manager, Gil Hickey, said: “Every child has a building site nearby to them - whether it is a private housing extension or a million pound housing development."
“Understandably some children are drawn to construction sites as exciting places to play, but they are not playgrounds and playing on then can have fatal consequences."
“We want the children to understand that whilst we make sure the site is as safe as possible, for children, a construction site is not a place to play, that the fences and signs are in place for their own safety and that they must keep out.”
Alison Ainslie of Wingrove Primary School said: “We were delighted that Dorin Construction took the time to visit the school and talk to the children."
“It is important for the children to understand the risks that are associated with venturing onto a building site unsupervised. I hope the message got through and that they stay safe when they are looking for places to play.”
