NORTH EAST CONSTRUCTION TEAMS BECOME FIRST IN THE UK TO STUDY FOR NEW GREEN QUALIFICATION

16th February 2009

CONSTRUCTION professionals from Dorin Construction and North Tyneside Council are the first students in the UK to embark on a new qualification launched by Gateshead-based training company, The Environmental Academy.

The qualification, 'Certificate in Site Waste Management Planning and Implementation (Level 3)', has been written and accredited by The Environmental Academy. It has been developed in response to new Government legislation which legally requires construction contractors to have detailed plans for site waste on projects over £300k, called a Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP).

Anna-Lisa Kelso, Director of Learning at The Environmental Academy, says: "The North East is leading the way with this qualification as it is the first time it has been run in the UK."

"Following the change in legislation in 2008 we recognised that there was a need for a nationally accredited qualification which will benefit companies in the construction sector. The learning outcomes of this course aim to provide those across the industry with the knowledge and skills necessary to write and implement a SWMP to meet the requirements of legislation."

The course is delivered via a half day advanced SWMP workshop and up to five half day site visits from a mentor to assist with writing and then implementing the SWMP for an organisation. It includes a detailed support pack and all information the learner requires to build their portfolio of evidence.

Dorin Construction Contacts Manager and Environmental Representative, Paul O’Brien, has already complete The Environmental Academy’s one day course on Site Waste Management Awareness (Level 2). He said: "The Site Waste Management Plan Regulations 2008 is a serious piece of legislation. Dorin have been training staff and preparing for its implementation for the last 12 months and now has SWMPs on all of its sites."

"This course is necessary for those with responsibility for writing and implementing SWMPs. Because it is very practical and evidence based it will ensure that we have the skills and qualifications to meet the legal requirements. I’m delighted we are the first students to be taking part in this course and looking forward to working through the modules."
