Councillors and members of the Affordable Housing Delivery Team from Tynedale Council were the first visitors to the largest affordable housing scheme built in Hexham since the 1980s.
The £3million Wydon Park development, on the edge of Hexham, is currently under construction by Newcastle-based contractors, Dorin Construction on behalf of Cheviot Housing.
The first phase is due for completion at the end of February, ahead of schedule. After donning hard hats and high visibility jackets, the visitors were keen to see how the scheme was progressing, since work started in April last year.
Mick McHugh Construction Director at Dorin Construction, said: “Although the project is still under construction, the group were able to make their way onto the site and inspect inside some of the completed properties.
“This has been an interesting and challenging project for Dorin Construction and we were delighted to welcome to the development members of the team from Tynedale Council who have been involved in the project since its inception.
“Having our first ‘official’ visitors to the site is a real milestone for the project and the positive feedback from the group was much appreciated.”
Led by Tynedale Council’s, Housing Enabling Officer, Vicky Law, the visit provided an opportunity for the group to meet with Cheviot Housing and Dorin Construction teams who provided an interesting overview and update on the project.
Built on redundant allotments owned by Tynedale Council, the Cheviot Housing scheme will give the area a new lease of life, which is currently seeing the Environment Agency remodelling the nearby Wydon Burn reservoir.
Councillor Edward Heslop is portfolio holder for housing on Tynedale Council’s cabinet. He says: “This development is an excellent example of Tynedale both using its housing enabling fund and providing land which it owns in order to facilitate much needed new housing.
“I am extremely impressed by the quality of the properties – they offer spacious living areas which will be energy efficient and therefore economic to run. They will also provide housing in one of our areas of highest need – with allocations looking in the first instance to people from Hexham.
“The development helps to remodel an area of Hexham which was partly redundant – whereas it will now provide great areas for leisure as well as some revamped facilities such as replacement garages.”
Once completed Wydon Park will feature 30 properties comprising of a mix of two, three and four bedroom houses, bungalows and flats.
The development will provide affordable housing to people living in Hexham and the first 10 properties have already been allocated.
Andrea Malcolm, Director of Cheviot Housing said: “This visit was beneficial for everyone involved in the Wydon Park development. Being able to go inside the completed units really brought the properties to life and everyone appreciated the space and quality of the new properties and the views across the Tyne Valley, which our new residents will be able to enjoy.”
Dorin Construction is recognised as one of the region’s leaders in the provision of construction services, undertaking work in a wide variety of sectors such as social housing, offices, care homes, education and industrial.
