2007 in Review
It seems impossible to believe that 2007 and all that has happened is almost a memory. There can be no doubt that 2007 has been the most momentous year in the history of the business, with some significant changes occurring across all of our businesses.
In February Ken Brown purchased David Kennerley’s shares and after twenty five years in the front line David achieved his long held ambition to retire. This presented many challenges for the company, including filling the void left behind by David and Philip. Thankfully the directors and staff have pulled together marvellously during 2007 and Ken and I are delighted with the progress the business has made.
In the year ending 31st December 2004 the Group made a loss, in the 18 month period to 30 June 2006 the Group broke even and I am pleased to report that, having just finished our audit, we will be reporting a Group profit of circa £70,000 for the year ended 30th June 2007.
This return to profitability is down to a number of factors but if we had to pick out one it would be the change in atmosphere and feeling throughout the organisation. Our Investors in People review occurred in September and our reviewer commented on how our culture had changed over the last two years and how the atmosphere and attitude of everyone seemed to be much more positive. This shift has definitely had a hugely positive effect on our business and I thank each of you for helping to contribute to this.
Dorin
Our construction teams have enjoyed a strong year, we have delivered some complex and tricky schemes to a high standard and satisfied our clients every increasing expectations.
I would like to congratulate all of our site teams on a strong year and hope for more of the same in 2008.
Gilwood Mast
In July we acquired Gilwood Engineering and achieved a long held ambition to develop a Mechanical and Electrical specialism. Following David Sharp’s retirement the integration of Mast and Gilwood has been overseen by David Duffy and Charles Clark. The results so far have been very encouraging and with the current order book 2008 looks very strong.
D&K
During the year we have invested further in D&K with the acquisition of 5 and 7 tonne excavators and many other small plant items. This expansion of the hire fleet has been in response to the continued profitability delivered by D&K for the past two years. With further investment scheduled for 2008 we expect turnover and profitability to hit new highs.
Garnett
Our roofing business has endured tough trading conditions for the last two years and in April, as a result of other changes, Martin Mair was brought in to turn Garnett around. The scale of the task faced by Martin should not be underestimated. He has put in a tremendous amount of work and effort to turn Garnett around and I am pleased to report that the order book is filling up and that the business is once again profitable.
In conclusion, 2007 was about consolidating our position and clearing the decks of old issues and nagging problems. It was also about laying down the foundations for the future, establishing areas for growth and working out our key markets. The directors are happy that we have done this. We are delighted with our return to profitability and look forward to 2008 with renewed confidence.
Finally, the directors and I would like to thank all staff for their continued efforts and support. It is much appreciated, and we wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
