Dorin Construction is commited to the training and development of all employees, by working closely with CITB-ConstructionSkills and developing the company Training Plan we are able to structure the way we recruit, train and monitor the needs of all employees, enabling employees to achieve their full potential and progress their chosen career path.
By working closely with Newcastle and Northumberland Colleges all site operatives have the opportunity to update their skills and work towards NVQs in various construction disciplines.
The Company is an active supporter of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme and the Construction Plant Competency Scheme, we have recently completed the training of 27 plant operators enabling them to obtain NVQ Level 2 in various categories of Specialised Plant & Machiery Operations and upgrade their CPCS cards from Trained Operator to the Competence Card.
Since 2006 we have employed ‘Safety Solutions’ to undertake our independent training. Each month, all of our site staff receives job specific training to ensure we meet and excel all legislation changes for which a certificate of competence is issued. The topics of training are pitched at HSE topical issues appropriate at that time.
In 2008 the legislation on Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP) changed, and to ensure Dorin stayed ahead of the forthcoming legal obligations, we embarked on an intensive training programme for all our staff across the board.
We encouraged three key members of staff to take part in the BREW project - a pilot scheme supported by the Government to help construction companies prepare Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP’s) in readiness for the forthcoming changes
For 2009 SWMP training has been included in the Environment training matrix for Site Managers and our Environmental Representative was one of the first students in the UK to begin the ‘Certificate in Site Waste Management Planning and Implementation (Level 3).
Apprentices
Apprentices have played an important part in the growing the business since it began over 25 years ago. As the number of apprenticeships offered has increased the support provided by the CITB has proved to be invaluable. By pairing up apprentices with some of the company’s most experienced workers and the support from the CITB and various colleges apprentices quickly become productive employees, with those showing potential provided the opoprtunity for further training after completing the apprenticeship programme.
